A local government councillor in Kaduna State, Nigeria, has been released after four days in captivity. David Ali, who represents Gwantu Ward in Sanga Local Government Area, was abducted by five armed men from his residence in Gwantu town late on Thursday. The kidnappers, reportedly equipped with sophisticated weapons, took Ali away in the presence of his family.
According to Sanga Local Government Chairman Anto Usman, Ali was released between 8 and 9 p.m. on Monday and has since been reunited with his family. Usman expressed concern about informants who assist criminal groups, contributing to pockets of insecurity, but noted that the area remains relatively stable, with residents continuing their daily activities.
To address security challenges, the local government has been holding regular security meetings to identify and curb hotspots. Usman reported that four arrests have been made this year, with the suspects now facing prosecution. While acknowledging that insecurity is an inevitable aspect of human society, he expressed optimism that the situation will soon be brought under control.
The chairman praised Governor Uba Sani for enhancing synergy among security agencies across the state, a move that has helped restore calm in troubled areas. The Kaduna State Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Mansir Hassan, could not be reached for comment on the incident.
The release of David Ali is a welcome development in a region that has faced security challenges. Strengthening security measures and addressing the root causes of insecurity remain crucial for maintaining peace and stability, and the councillor’s freedom is a positive step toward restoring normalcy in the area.
