Simone Gbagbo, the former First Lady of Ivory Coast, has been cleared to run in the country’s presidential election scheduled for October 25. She will face incumbent President Alassane Ouattara, who assumed power after her husband, Laurent Gbagbo, was ousted in 2011 following a post‑election conflict. The race also includes former ministers Jean‑Louis Billon, Ahoua Don Mello and Henriette Lagou, all of whom contested the 2015 election.

Former Prime Minister Pascal Affi N’Guessan and ex‑Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam were barred from participating, raising concerns about the election’s legitimacy and the potential for instability. Simone Gbagbo’s candidacy is particularly significant in a country where women are largely underrepresented in leadership positions, marking a notable development in the Ivorian political landscape.

As the election approaches, the country’s electoral commission will be closely watched to ensure a free and fair process. The 2010 presidential election, which led to Laurent Gbagbo’s ousting, was marked by violence and instability. This upcoming vote is seen as an opportunity for Ivory Coast to consolidate its democratic gains and move forward.

With several candidates vying for the top position, the contest is expected to be closely fought. Simone Gbagbo’s clearance adds a new dimension to the race, highlighting the need for greater representation of women in Ivorian politics. As the campaign season unfolds, attention will turn to the candidates’ policies and their ability to address pressing issues such as economic development, security, and social cohesion.

The Ivorian presidential election will be an important test of the country’s democratic institutions and its capacity to conduct a peaceful transfer of power. The international community will be watching closely, hoping the vote will mark a significant step forward for Ivory Coast’s democratic development.
