Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal underscored the pivotal role of education in tackling insecurity and poverty during a speech in Gusau on Friday. He asserted that “if we want to overcome insecurity and poverty, we must send our children to school,” emphasizing that education is essential for breaking the cycle of these challenges.

The remarks were made as the government distributed instructional and learning materials procured under the 2023 Federal Government’s Universal Basic Education (UBE) intervention funds. A total of 408,139 teaching materials will be handed out across the state’s 14 local government areas. Governor Lawal highlighted that teachers cannot succeed without adequate resources, stressing the need for proper materials to support effective teaching.

Education has been a focal point of the state’s agenda, with concerted efforts to improve access to quality schooling for all children. Zamfara State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mallam Wadatau Madawaki, represented by Permanent Secretary Maryam Yahaya Shantali, reiterated that every child in the state deserves quality education. The Zamfara Coordinator of the UBE Commission, Nafi’u Yusuf Zurmi, confirmed that the state has fulfilled its counterpart funding obligations and pledged continued partnership in promoting basic education.

Professor Nasiru Anka, Executive Secretary of the Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board, explained that the distributed materials were purchased using UBE Commission intervention funds and state budgetary allocations. This initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the education sector and equip students with the resources they need to succeed.

By prioritizing education, the government aims to address the root causes of insecurity and poverty, offering a brighter future for its citizens. As Zamfara continues to pursue its education goals, the success of this distribution will be crucial in gauging the effectiveness of its efforts to promote basic education and improve the lives of its people.
