The Abia State Government has announced that it has paid compensation to landowners whose properties are located along the runway of the Abia Airport project. According to government officials, any outstanding payments are likely due to exceptional cases that will be addressed on an individual basis. This clarification comes after a group of villagers protested earlier this week, claiming they had not received compensation from the government.
The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Caleb Ajagba, made this announcement during a fact-finding visit to the Nsulu community in Isialangwa North LGA, accompanied by the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, and other senior government officials. Ajagba explained that some landowners have experienced delays due to issues with their bank accounts or incomplete indemnity certificates, which are required for payment.
The government has reportedly paid compensation to approximately 3,500 people and has resolved disputes over land that was cleared in error by a contractor. Ajagba assured the community that those who have not yet received payment will be attended to once they complete the necessary indemnity certificates. He also emphasized that the Nsulu community is not opposed to the airport project.
Commissioner Chukwumerije reiterated that landowners have been paid and that any outstanding cases will be addressed individually. A community leader, Mr. Echezola Ukaumunna, appreciated the government’s visit, stating that it helped clear up misconceptions and misinterpretations. He attributed the confusion to a lack of proper communication from the traditional ruler of the community.
The Abia Airport project has been a significant development initiative in the region, and the government’s efforts to address the concerns of affected landowners are crucial to the project’s success. With the government’s commitment to resolving outstanding issues, the project is expected to move forward, bringing potential economic benefits to the region. The government’s engagement with the community is seen as a positive step towards building trust and ensuring that the project is implemented in a fair and transparent manner.
