The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is confident it can challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. State Caretaker Committee Chairman Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi expressed this optimism while monitoring the party’s ward congresses in Benin City, which were held to elect new executives and delegates across the state’s 192 wards.
Despite a heavy downpour, a large turnout of party members was observed, with many defying the weather to participate. Aziegbemi noted that the party is experiencing a resurgence in Edo, citing the enthusiasm and commitment of its members as evidence. He praised the peaceful conduct of the congresses, attributing the success to the unity and resilience of the participants. Although he had initially been concerned about the outcome, he was pleasantly surprised by the vibrant and active participation.
Aziegbemi believes that the perceived failure of the APC government at both federal and state levels will create an opportunity for the PDP to reclaim Edo in 2027. The ward congresses were monitored by Media Talk Africa at Oredo Wards I, II, and III in Benin City, and reports indicated a peaceful, orderly process.
Tariga Tulagha, Chairman of the PDP Ward Congress Electoral Committee, also commended the unity and cooperation displayed by party members, dismissing speculation about internal crises. He emphasized that the poll results reflected a strong sense of unity and purpose, with no evidence of division or factionalism.
The successful conduct of the ward congresses is seen as a significant step toward the 2027 general elections, positioning the PDP to challenge the APC’s dominance in the state. As the political landscape evolves, the Edo State PDP’s renewed sense of purpose and unity is likely to be a key factor in the upcoming elections.
