Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has launched the construction of a multi-lane flyover at the Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi, in collaboration with the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi. The project commenced on Saturday, following the recent demolition of the Food Basket monument, which was torn down to make way for the new infrastructure.

The flyover is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, stimulate economic activity, and enhance the aesthetics of the state capital. Governor Alia expressed his confidence in the partnership with the Federal Ministry of Works, stating that it would facilitate the project’s timely completion and bring lasting economic benefits to the residents of Benue.

Minister Umahi reiterated the federal government’s commitment to modernizing the country’s road network, emphasizing that the Wurukum project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to strengthen transport infrastructure and drive development nationwide. The project is part of a broader effort to improve critical road networks across the country.

The demolition of the Food Basket monument, a prominent landmark at the Wurukum Roundabout, was a necessary step to pave the way for the flyover’s construction. The state government had deemed the monument’s removal essential to facilitate the new infrastructure project. The flyover’s construction is anticipated to have a positive impact on the local economy, enhancing the overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

As the project progresses, it is expected to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and improve the state’s infrastructure. The collaboration between the state and federal governments demonstrates a commitment to delivering critical infrastructure projects that benefit the local community. With the project’s completion, the Wurukum Roundabout is expected to become a model for efficient traffic management, reflecting the government’s efforts to modernize and develop the region’s transportation network.
