Frank Nweke Jr., the former Minister of Information and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in Enugu State, has criticized the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, for neglecting the concerns raised about the credibility of Saturday’s presidential election. Nweke expressed that Yakubu seemed more focused on declaring a winner than addressing the issues that Nigerians were worried about.
In a media chat with journalists in Enugu on Wednesday, Nweke reflected on the outcome of the recent presidential election. He offered prayers for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, his running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, and their entire team, wishing them grace, wisdom, and strength as they navigate the next steps. He highlighted that the election was marred by several issues, including the late arrival of materials, violent attacks, voter suppression, and reports of rigging that were corroborated by international observers.
Nweke stated, “In an election marked by late arrival of materials, violent attacks, and reports of rigging substantiated by international observers, it is unfortunate that INEC prioritized declaring a winner over addressing the concerns of Nigerians. This is disappointing and unwise.” He further prayed for strength, wisdom, protection, and divine grace for Peter Obi, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, and their team, encouraging those who dared to believe not to lose heart.
He urged Nigerians to remain focused and resolute in their quest for a new Nigeria, advising them to avoid any form of violence. “Compatriots, I believe that we will rewrite our story. Keep hope alive, avoid violence, and be your brother’s keeper. My prayer is that wisdom and peace will guide our thoughts, utterances, and actions in the coming days and weeks,” he added.
