A significant political shift has occurred in Benue State, Nigeria, as at least 10,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other parties defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Agatu Local Government Area. The mass defection took place on May 13, 2025, during the official unveiling of the ADC in Agatu, led by the state chairman, Terngu Tsegba.

The well‑attended event honored Sir John Ngbede, a prominent Agatu leader who donated a building to serve as the party’s new secretariat. Ngbede was formally unveiled as the ADC leader in Agatu and declared that the dominance of the PDP and APC in the area was over, a statement that was met with enthusiasm from the crowd. Tsegba praised the Agatu leadership for organizing what he described as the largest unveiling ceremony in the state, commending Ngbede for mobilizing grassroots support and assuring attendees that the ADC is committed to inclusiveness, stability and internal democracy.

Several dignitaries were present, including State Secretary Samson Okwu and former PDP Chairman Chris Adaba Aba. The ceremony also featured the commissioning of the new party office, further solidifying the ADC’s growing presence in Agatu.

With this substantial influx of new members, the ADC is poised to make a significant impact in upcoming elections, potentially altering Benue State’s political landscape. The defection of thousands from major parties underscores shifting political allegiances in Nigeria, and the ADC’s focus on grassroots engagement and community development may resonate with voters, leading to increased support in future contests.
