The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has disclosed that several aspirants are competing for its 2027 presidential ticket, beyond the names that have been widely speculated. Deputy National Legal Adviser Okechukwu Osuoha said intense internal negotiations and consultations are underway to determine the party’s flagbearer. While former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde have been mentioned as possible candidates, Osuoha cautioned that these names remain speculative. The party is currently focused on identifying the most credible candidate through private discussions and stakeholder engagements, and other potential aspirants from the South are also holding private talks to position themselves for the ticket.
The PDP’s immediate priority is to hold its national convention to elect new officers who will lead the party for the next four years. During this period, the party will narrow down its list of potential candidates and conduct a free and fair primary to ensure transparency, demonstrating its commitment to democracy. This development follows Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro’s listing of Jonathan, Obi, and Makinde as being considered for the ticket, while noting that additional qualified contenders from the South could still join the race as consultations deepen.
The PDP’s efforts to select a candidate are seen as crucial in the lead‑up to the 2027 presidential election. As the party moves forward with its internal processes, the outcomes of the national convention and subsequent primary elections will be closely watched. The ability to conduct a transparent and fair selection process will be key to the PDP’s success in the upcoming election. With the party’s commitment to democracy and transparency, the stage is set for a competitive and potentially divisive primary, and the eventual candidate will face significant challenges in the general election, making the selection process all the more critical.
