The Joint Action Committee of Non‑Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a seven‑day strike notice to the Federal Government of Nigeria. In a letter addressed to Minister of Labour and Employment Muhammad Dingyadi, the unions demanded that the government resolve outstanding labour issues within the specified timeframe or face industrial action.
The grievances listed by the unions include the disbursement of ₦50 billion in earned allowances, withheld salaries, and unpaid arrears of the 25 %/35 % salary increment. They also expressed dissatisfaction with the unfulfilled renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement. According to the unions, members in universities were shortchanged, while staff in inter‑university centres were completely excluded from the ₦50 billion allowances disbursement.
The unions further demanded the immediate payment of the withheld arrears and the 25 %/35 % increment, stating that the government had failed to honour repeated assurances. They accused the government of sidelining non‑teaching unions in renegotiating the 2009 agreement, describing the delay as unfair and unacceptable. The letter, signed by NASU General Secretary Peter Adeyemi and SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim, emphasized that despite assurances, nothing concrete has been done to pay their members.
The seven‑day notice, effective September 15, 2025, serves as a warning to the government to address the outstanding issues. Failure to do so will trigger industrial actions, including strikes. This decision marks a significant development in the ongoing labour dispute between the government and non‑academic staff in Nigerian universities, and its outcome will be closely monitored for its potential impact on the education sector and the livelihoods of affected staff members.
