Ogun Judiciary Releases 149 Inmates Decongests Correctional Centers

Decongestion: We freed 149 inmates in last legal year - Ogun Chief Judge

The Ogun State judiciary has marked the beginning of the new 2025/2026 legal year with a merit award and retirement ceremony, during which the Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, highlighted the accomplishments of the past year. A total of 23 judicial officers and staff members, including gardeners and security personnel, were recognized for their service.

According to Justice Dipeolu, the judiciary has made significant strides in the past year, including the release of 149 inmates from correctional centers in the state through jail delivery exercises. This effort aims to decongest the facilities and ensure that justice is served efficiently. The Chief Judge also mentioned the appointment of three new High Court judges and 15 judicial research officers, which will enhance the judiciary’s capacity to handle cases effectively.

The judiciary has also invested in technology, installing verbatim recording systems in several High Courts and setting up virtual courts in various judicial divisions, including Abeokuta, Sagamu, and Ifo. Furthermore, 22 laptops were distributed to Magistrates and Judicial Research Officers to facilitate their work, and a health insurance plan was introduced for Magistrates and other judicial personnel.

Justice Dipeolu acknowledged the challenges faced by the judiciary in the past year but expressed pride in the progress made, stating that the tests had been turned into stepping stones. The Chief Judge also bid farewell to retiring personnel, expressing gratitude for their dedicated service and acknowledging the legacy they leave behind.

The ceremony, held at the judiciary complex in Abeokuta, marked the beginning of a new legal year, and the judiciary is poised to continue its efforts to build a more efficient, empathetic, and accessible justice system for the citizens of Ogun State. With the new appointments, technology upgrades, and initiatives in place, the judiciary is well-positioned to address the challenges of the upcoming year and ensure that justice is served in a fair and timely manner.
