On Wednesday, members of the House of Representatives celebrated the victory of Bola Tinubu, the candidate from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Deputy Speaker Ahmed Wase, who presided over the day’s plenary session, expressed his appreciation for Nigerians who support democracy. In his closing remarks, Wase stated, “Respected colleagues, I want to appreciate every Nigerian who is truly for democracy and who is supporting democracy, for their calmness, show of love and to congratulate our brother, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for winning the presidential election.” The lawmakers responded with applause, and Olufemi Fayeye, the leader of the South-West Caucus, encouraged members to give Tinubu a standing ovation.
Wase emphasized that the lawmakers are the true representatives of the Nigerian people. He noted that the performance of the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, reflects the credibility of the election, thanking the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their commendable work. INEC had declared Tinubu as the President-elect in the early hours of Wednesday after he secured 8,794,726 votes in the presidential election held the previous Saturday. The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, confirmed that Tinubu won against other contenders, including Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party. Each of the three leading candidates won in 12 states, while Kwankwaso only claimed Kano State.
Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, also congratulated Tinubu on his electoral victory. In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, Gbajabiamila described Tinubu’s win as a testament to his years of hard work and dedication to fostering unity in Nigeria. He characterized the victory as a triumph for democracy, praising Tinubu for his resilience and commitment. “The victory of the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a victory for democracy. I have said time and again that Tinubu is the best for Nigeria at this time, and God has answered our prayers,” he stated. Gbajabiamila expressed confidence that Tinubu would deliver on the mandate given to him by Nigerians and urged opposition candidates to prioritize the nation and concede defeat.
Deputy Speaker Wase also extended his congratulations to Tinubu, highlighting that the APC candidate’s victory, which garnered support from across the country, reflects the acceptance of his “Renewed Hope” ideology as a foundation for national rebirth.
