The All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s claim that the current government is failing to address food insecurity in Nigeria. APC spokesperson Felix Morka criticized Atiku’s statement, suggesting that he is out of touch with the country’s present situation. Speaking on Channels Television’s *Politics Today*, Morka said that if Atiku were aware of the government’s economic programmes, he would not have made such remarks. He also noted that Atiku’s comments coincided with reports of declining inflation figures in the country.
Earlier, Atiku accused the government of doing little to combat hunger and poverty, describing the rising poverty rate as unacceptable. He emphasized that food insecurity is a daily reality nationwide and argued that any government worth its salt should prioritize the welfare and security of its people. Atiku’s statement, released through his spokesperson Paul Ibe, warned that widespread hunger and unbearable living conditions can trigger socio‑political uprisings and revolutions. He observed that most violent uprisings worldwide are driven by extreme poverty, especially in resource‑rich nations.
The exchange between the APC and Atiku underscores the ongoing debate over the government’s handling of economic issues, including food insecurity and poverty. While recent reports of lower inflation may be seen as a positive development, food insecurity remains a pressing concern for many Nigerians. As the government continues to implement its economic programmes, it remains to be seen how effectively these measures will address the country’s socio‑economic challenges.
