The Zamfara State Government has established the State Persons With Disability Board to promote equal access to opportunities and safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities. Secretary to the Government Abubakar Nakwada explained that the move follows recent amendments to the state law designed to protect individuals with disabilities from discrimination. The establishment of the board aligns with Governor Dauda Lawal’s commitment to social welfare and inclusive governance.
The amended law introduces key changes, including the replacement of the board’s chairman with an executive chairman and the requirement that board members be persons with disabilities. These provisions ensure that the board’s activities directly serve the interests of the targeted groups. Governor Lawal has appointed Alhaji Usman Nahuche, a retired permanent secretary and member of the Deaf cluster, as the pioneer chairman. Other members represent various disability clusters—spinal cord, deaf, physically challenged, and blind individuals—as well as a representative for women.
The board’s creation reflects the governor’s dedication to social justice, equity, and inclusiveness. Appointees have been charged with working diligently to uplift the living standards of persons with disabilities across the state. Governor Lawal expressed appreciation to development partners and stakeholders who supported the law amendment process.
The establishment of the board is a significant step toward promoting the rights and well‑being of persons with disabilities in Zamfara State. With the new board in place, individuals with disabilities can expect increased access to opportunities and greater protection from discrimination. The state government’s efforts to foster inclusivity and social justice are likely to have a positive impact on the lives of persons with disabilities, and the board’s work will be closely watched in the coming months.
