Lagos APC hits back at Atiku over EFCC allegations

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has declared that the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara remains unlawful, even after the governor’s recent reinstatement. In a Facebook post on Thursday, Abubakar said there is nothing to celebrate about President Bola Tinubu’s decision to restore Fubara to office.

The crisis in Rivers State began on 18 March when President Tinubu declared a state of emergency amid a prolonged political stalemate. He suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all state lawmakers for six months. When the initial suspension period ended, Tinubu lifted it on Wednesday, allowing the officials to resume their duties.

Abubakar argues that the president lacks the authority to suspend democratically elected officials. He maintains that the suspension of Governor Fubara and the state House of Assembly was unconstitutional from the start and remains so. According to Abubakar, Tinubu’s actions reveal a disregard for democratic principles and the rule of law.

The Rivers State political crisis has ignited a heated debate over the limits of presidential power and the need to uphold democratic norms. The episode carries significant implications for Nigeria’s political stability and the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches. Following the governor’s reinstatement, attention will turn to the next steps for Rivers State and the possible repercussions of Tinubu’s actions. The international community will be watching closely to see how the situation unfolds and how Nigeria’s democratic institutions respond. As the country navigates this complex scenario, it is essential to prioritize the rule of law, respect for democratic principles, and the protection of human rights.
