Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, has been appointed Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced the appointment in a statement on Thursday. In this role, Idris will shape both domestic and international energy policies while continuing to lead NNPC Trading Limited, serving as the country’s principal technical liaison within OPEC.
As a member of OPEC’s Economic Commission Board (ECB), Idris will contribute to technical deliberations and policy recommendations. She will also coordinate closely with the OPEC Governor and national stakeholders—including NNPC Limited, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources—to ensure that Nigeria’s energy interests are effectively represented and aligned with broader OPEC objectives.
Idris brings over two decades of experience in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. She holds a B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Abuja and an M.Sc. in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee, Scotland. Her career includes positions at the Bureau of Public Enterprises, the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, and various roles within NNPC’s Crude Oil Marketing Division, where she rose through the ranks.
Before becoming Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited in April 2025, Idris served as Executive Director of Crude and Condensate and Executive Director of Planning and Commercial. Her extensive expertise will be invaluable in her new capacity as National Representative to OPEC. The appointment underscores Nigeria’s commitment to effective representation and active participation in international energy policy discussions, with Idris’s leadership poised to shape the country’s energy strategies and promote its interests on the global stage.
