Kenya's Faith Cherotich claims gold in the women's 3,000m steeplechase

Kenya’s Faith Cherotich, 21, captured the gold medal in the women’s 3,000‑metre steeplechase at the World Championships, upsetting defending champion Winfred Yavi of Bahrain. Cherotich delivered an impressive performance on the final lap, securing her first world title and adding to her bronze from the 2021 World Championships in Budapest and an Olympic bronze from the 2024 Paris Games.

The race featured fierce competition and dramatic moments, most notably when Yavi stumbled over a hurdle in the final stretch. Cherotich navigated the obstacle expertly, then unleashed a powerful kick to surge ahead and cross the line in 8 minutes 51.59 seconds, setting a new championship record. Her victory reflects her growth from a bronze‑medalist to a world champion.

Cherotich credited her coach for instilling confidence that allowed her to seize the moment and chase down her rivals. “I am so happy to win today. Improving from bronze to gold is amazing to me,” she said after the race.

Olympic champion Winfred Yavi earned silver with a time of 8 minutes 56.46 seconds, while Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew claimed bronze, posting a personal best of 8 minutes 58.86 seconds. The competition was not without setbacks: Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai, the 2021 Olympic gold medallist from the same venue, did not finish after falling near the end.

Despite humid conditions, the pace remained impressive, prompting fans to wonder whether Beatrice Chepkoech’s world record of 8:44.32 might have been challenged. Additional thrills included a fall involving Jeruto and Lemngole at the last water jump, which opened the door for Almayew to make her move and secure her first senior global medal.

Cherotich’s triumph marks a significant achievement for Kenyan athletics and is expected to inspire upcoming athletes. As the championships continue, fans can anticipate more intense competition and dramatic moments. With her first world title, Cherotich has solidified her status as a leading figure in the women’s 3,000‑metre steeplechase, and her future performances will be closely watched by fans and pundits alike.
