The Edo State Internal Revenue Service has taken enforcement action against Market Square, also known as Sunday Foods, in Benin City over alleged tax defaults exceeding N27 million. The agency’s statement explains that the action follows the company’s failure to settle outstanding liabilities uncovered during a five‑year audit covering 2018 to 2023. The audit revealed unpaid obligations on Pay‑As‑You‑Earn and Withholding Tax.
The revenue service noted that the assessment was communicated to Market Square, and because the company raised no objection within the stipulated time, the tax liability became final and enforceable. Despite repeated reminders, the company did not clear its debt, prompting the authority to obtain a court order to seal its premises. On 19 September 2025, the Edo State Internal Revenue Service sealed Market Square’s premises, citing non‑payment of taxes amounting to N27,005,117.97. The agency has said it will unseal the premises immediately upon confirmation of full payment.
According to the agency, tax payment is a fundamental civic duty for businesses and individuals operating in the state, and tax revenue is essential for providing infrastructure and essential services. The Edo State Internal Revenue Service appreciates organizations that regularly meet their tax obligations and urges defaulters to do the same to avoid enforcement actions. Voluntary compliance not only supports government projects but also enhances a company’s reputation and smooths business operations.
The action against Market Square serves as a reminder of the importance of tax compliance for businesses operating in Edo State. The revenue service will likely continue to monitor tax payments and take enforcement action against defaulters to ensure that all businesses operate on a level playing field. As the state government relies on tax revenue to fund projects and provide essential services, the agency’s efforts to recover outstanding liabilities are crucial for promoting a stable and prosperous business environment. With its premises sealed, Market Square must prioritize settling its tax debt to resume operations and avoid further enforcement measures.
