The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, announced the approval of resident doctors’ demands during the inauguration of the Northern Parkway construction project, which stretches from Ring Road II to Ring III on Shehu Yar’Adua Way in Abuja. He praised the doctors for ending their strike, noting the administration’s appreciation for their understanding in the interest of patients and the territory. Wike confirmed that all the doctors’ requests have been signed and directed the FCT Acting Head of Service and Senior Special Adviser on Administration, Samuel Atang, to implement the agreements.
The resident doctors had occupied the picket lines to press for payment of salary arrears ranging from one to six months, owed to members employed since 2023. Their other demands included the immediate recruitment of new staff, settlement of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, payment of arrears arising from the 25 %/35 % upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, and clear timelines for completing skipping and conversion processes for all members. After several weeks of negotiations, the strike was called off, and the approval of these demands is expected to relieve the doctors and improve healthcare services in the territory.
The Northern Parkway project, also inaugurated by the Minister, aims to create more employment opportunities, ease traffic congestion, and boost economic activities. It forms part of the administration’s broader effort to improve infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for residents of the Federal Capital Territory. With the doctors’ demands now approved, attention turns to implementing the agreements and resuming full healthcare services, a development welcomed by patients and the medical community and anticipated to have a positive impact on the overall healthcare system in the FCT.
