Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has responded to comments made by former Sokoto governor Aminu Tambuwal. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, Wike addressed Tambuwal’s statement of preference for Atiku Abubakar over him for the country’s leadership. Wike questionned the concept of leadership and friendship, stating that “you cannot talk about leadership and ignore the person.”
Wike accused Tambuwal and Atiku Abubakar of being inconsistent in their political stance, suggesting that they frequently switch parties for personal gain. He alleged that Tambuwal’s support for Atiku was motivated by a desire to secure a Senate role if Atiku were to win the presidency. This criticism is part of a long-running rift between Wike and key figures in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), including Atiku and Tambuwal, which dates back to 2023.
The rift originated from Wike’s criticism of Atiku, Tambuwal, and Bukola Saraki for abandoning zoning commitments that could have favoured the South. Wike had previously backed Tambuwal’s bid for Speaker of the House of Representatives, despite the party’s preference for another candidate. Tambuwal, however, maintains that his choices are guided by governance values rather than friendship, and that disagreements with leaders are ideological.
Tambuwal had earlier appeared on the same programme, declaring his loyalty to Atiku over Wike. He stated that his preference was based on the leadership of the country and the people, and that he would support Atiku due to his governance values. Despite their political differences, Tambuwal stressed that disputes should not be mistaken for personal animosity, and that he would still maintain a personal relationship with Wike.
The exchange between Wike and Tambuwal highlights the ongoing divisions within the PDP, which have been evident since 2023. The party’s internal conflicts have been driven by issues such as zoning commitments and personal ambitions. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these divisions will impact the party’s future prospects.
