Nigeria’s fight against illegal mining has received a significant boost with the collaboration between the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals. The partnership aims to enhance the value of the country’s mineral resources and ensure their extraction is carried out in compliance with national laws.
The alliance was formalized during a courtesy visit by the NSCDC Mining Marshals to the RMRDC headquarters in Abuja. According to ACC Attah John Onoja, Commander of the Mining Marshals, the mission of the marshals extends beyond providing on-ground security to ensuring that mineral resources contribute to economic growth. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with RMRDC in areas such as data access, technical expertise, and support for the prosecution of offenders.
The Director-General of RMRDC, Professor Nnanyelugo Ike-Muanso, praised the marshals for their commitment to tackling illegal mining and assured them of the council’s support. The RMRDC will provide resources such as data sharing, joint training programs, laboratory analysis of minerals, and technical support to aid the marshals’ operations. This collaboration will enable the council to align its scientific efforts with field realities, recognizing the critical role security plays in adding value to raw materials.
The NSCDC has reaffirmed its commitment to providing security for mineral mapping exercises, particularly in high-risk areas where researchers and technical experts are vulnerable. This partnership is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s mineral sector, which has significant potential for economic growth. By combining the expertise of the RMRDC and the NSCDC, the country can better regulate its mineral resources and ensure that their extraction benefits the economy and the people.
The collaboration between the RMRDC and the NSCDC is a significant step towards addressing the challenges facing Nigeria’s mineral sector. With the mutual support and cooperation of these two organizations, the country can effectively combat illegal mining, promote sustainable mining practices, and maximize the value of its mineral resources. As Nigeria continues to develop its mineral sector, this partnership will play a crucial role in shaping the country’s economic future.
