Human rights activist Ann‑Kio Briggs has criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for failing to address the prolonged political crises in Rivers State, calling it a breach of trust with the people. Speaking on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics,” Briggs expressed disappointment with the party’s inaction, which has left residents to suffer the consequences of ongoing instability.
Briggs, a member of the Rivers Elders Forum, noted that despite the loyalty of Rivers people to the PDP since 1999, the party has not reciprocated this support when it mattered most. As a stakeholder and elder, she felt let down by the PDP’s inability to rise to the occasion, citing her own history of voting for the party.
The activist attributed the party’s ineffectiveness to internal divisions and power struggles that have weakened its influence and worsened the political situation in the state. According to Briggs, the PDP’s negligence has forced Rivers State to grapple with avoidable damage, and its failure to act responsibly has had significant consequences for a region already embroiled in extended political crises.
Briggs’ comments echo the concerns of many Rivers State residents, who are increasingly frustrated with the instability and its impact on their lives. The situation reflects broader political challenges facing Nigeria, where internal party conflicts often hinder effective governance. As the country navigates its complex political landscape, the failure of major parties like the PDP to address internal issues can have far‑reaching consequences for citizens, affecting the state’s development and the well‑being of its residents.
