Samuel Onuigbo, the lawmaker representing the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives, has raised concerns regarding his defeat in the recent senatorial election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Darlington Nwokocha, the candidate from the Labour Party, as the winner for the Abia Central Senatorial District. Onuigbo has expressed his disagreement with this announcement, demanding an explanation from INEC on how he lost to the Labour Party candidate.
During a press conference in Umuahia on Wednesday, Onuigbo asserted that INEC failed to include the name of his party in the result sheet for the 2023 Abia Central Senatorial District election. He described the documentation of his scores as “shambolic,” arguing that this oversight undermined the votes cast by his supporters. Onuigbo emphasized that this issue should be addressed by INEC and the leadership of his party, the APC, which he claims did not take timely action to rectify the anomaly.
He expressed astonishment at the conduct of the recent elections, stating that INEC did not fulfill its statutory responsibility to ensure free, fair, and credible polls. Onuigbo is currently consulting with his attorneys to determine the appropriate response to what he considers a significant oversight. He firmly rejected the figure of 7,997 votes attributed to him and his party by INEC, labeling it a manufactured number aimed at preserving the commission’s reputation.
