H-1B Workers Abroad Race To US As Trump Order Sparks Panic • Channels Television

The United States Mission in Nigeria reiterated its commitment to combating corruption worldwide, stating that anyone involved in corrupt practices can be barred from entering the United States, regardless of economic status or position. The declaration was posted on the Mission’s official social media account on Monday, reaffirming the country’s stance on anti‑corruption efforts.

In May 2023, the United States announced visa bans on individuals who disrupted Nigeria’s recent general elections, demonstrating its resolve to support democracy in the country. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized on the State Department website that the United States is committed to advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world. The visa restrictions on those who undermined the democratic process during the 2023 election cycle marked a significant step in that direction.

The United States has also tightened its immigration policies. President Donald Trump introduced a $100,000 fee on H‑1B visas for foreigners, a move that caused panic and confusion among H‑1B workers abroad, many of whom rushed to return to the United States to avoid the new rule. A White House official later clarified that the order applies only to new applicants, not to holders of existing visas or those seeking renewals, easing some of the uncertainty.

In a social‑media post, the U.S. Mission emphasized that the fight against corruption knows no borders and that even high‑profile individuals can be denied U.S. visas for corrupt behavior. This stance underscores the United States’ commitment to promoting transparency and accountability globally. Recent developments highlight ongoing U.S. efforts to combat corruption and support democracy in Nigeria and elsewhere. As anti‑corruption measures continue, individuals and organizations involved in corrupt practices will face increasing scrutiny and potential consequences, including visa restrictions.
