Uganda Presidential Race Kyagulanyi Seeks Nomination

The National Unity Platform (NUP) is urging Ugandans to maintain peace and participate in large numbers as party leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu prepares for his nomination in the upcoming 2026 presidential election. According to NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, today marks a significant moment for the opposition party, as Kyagulanyi seeks to challenge incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for nearly four decades.

Rubongoya emphasized the importance of peaceful participation, encouraging Ugandans to “remain peaceful, but at the same time, enjoy the day and come out in large numbers” in Natete, where the event is taking place. The party will also use this occasion to pay tribute to its late deputy president, Jolly Mugisha, who passed away on the same date last year. A small function will be held to honor Mugisha’s memory when Kyagulanyi arrives.

Kyagulanyi’s nomination is expected to take place later today at the Electoral Commission headquarters, marking a crucial step in his presidential campaign. As one of the main challengers to President Museveni in the 2026 elections, Kyagulanyi’s candidacy has garnered significant attention, particularly following his prominent performance in the 2021 contest.

The 2026 presidential election is expected to be a highly contested race, with President Museveni seeking to extend his tenure. The NUP’s call for peaceful participation underscores the importance of maintaining stability and calm during this critical period. As the electoral process unfolds, Ugandans will be closely watching the developments, and the international community will be monitoring the situation.

With Kyagulanyi’s nomination, the stage is set for a potentially intense campaign season. The NUP’s efforts to mobilize supporters and promote peaceful participation will be crucial in shaping the outcome of the election. As the country moves forward, the focus will be on ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process, which is essential for Uganda’s democratic development.
