Aderombi Adedayo, known as DeeOne, is a reality‑show star and comedian who recently claimed that singer Olu Maintain’s hit “Yahooze” has harmed Nigeria’s reputation. Speaking on the Echo Room podcast, DeeOne linked the song to the normalization of internet fraud—commonly called “Yahoo Yahoo”—in the country.
DeeOne argued that before “Yahooze” was released, involvement in 419 scams was viewed as shameful in Nigeria. However, the song’s popularity and its accompanying dance move shifted public perception, making the illicit activity appear more acceptable. He said young people were inspired by the track and began to see internet fraud as a viable profession, which in turn tarnished Nigeria’s global image. According to DeeOne, Nigerians traveling abroad are often stereotyped as fraudsters, a stigma he attributes in part to the song’s influence.
The controversy surrounding “Yahooze” is not new. Since its 2007 release, the lyrics and music video have been criticized for glorifying internet fraud and potentially influencing youth. While Nigeria has introduced various measures to combat fraud and improve its international standing, the problem remains a significant challenge, and the country’s reputation continues to suffer.
DeeOne’s remarks have revived the debate over how popular culture shapes attitudes toward internet fraud in Nigeria. Olu Maintain has not responded to the accusations.
