Guardiola defends Manchester Citys defensive style against Arsenal

EPL: Why I changed Man City's style of play against Arsenal - Guardiola opens up

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has addressed the team’s defensive strategy in their recent 1-1 draw against Arsenal in the Premier League. Speaking to reporters, Guardiola emphasized that his team’s approach remains unchanged, but rather, the situation on Sunday necessitated a more defensive mindset as Arsenal proved to be the stronger side.

The match at Emirates Stadium saw Manchester City register their lowest possession percentage under Guardiola’s management, with just 32.8% of the ball. This led to accusations that the team had “parked the bus,” a tactic Guardiola claims he has never employed throughout his career.

Guardiola deflected criticism by suggesting that his players are best positioned to comment on any perceived changes in the team’s approach. He stated, “Maybe the players are the most credible to talk about if really, really I changed the approach because they are in every meeting, they are in every game, they are in every post-meeting, post-game. You can ask them.”

The manager acknowledged that Arsenal’s performance was deserving of credit, forcing Manchester City onto the back foot. He explained, “I think it’s completely the same, completely. What changed is the opponents play a different way, we are not able to do it better. I said after the game, Arsenal were better.”

Guardiola reiterated his commitment to his preferred playing style, while also acknowledging that sometimes opponents can pose significant challenges that cannot be overcome. He noted, “Sometimes the opponents are good and create the challenges that you cannot handle and the other one. But since I retire in this club, or I retire, I would love to play in the way I want to play.”

The draw against Arsenal has sparked debate about Manchester City’s tactics, but Guardiola remains resolute in his approach. As the team prepares for their upcoming fixtures, it will be interesting to see how they respond to the criticism and adapt to the challenges posed by their opponents. With the Premier League season still in its early stages, Manchester City will be looking to regain their momentum and make a strong push for the title.
