The Ebonyi State government has provided financial assistance and relief materials to 894 victims of a recent flood disaster in the Enohia Itim community of Afikpo Local Government Area. The flood, which occurred between July and August, claimed eight lives and caused extensive damage to houses, farmlands and other property.
Families who lost loved ones received N1 million each, while those whose crops were destroyed were given N500,000 each. Individuals whose houses and property were damaged received N250,000 each, together with four bags of rice, two bags of garri, mattresses and buckets. The distribution exercise was supervised by the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Human Capital Development and Monitoring, Mrs. Ann Aligwe, who praised Governor Francis Nwifuru for his responsive leadership.
The governor’s administration has been commended for its swift response to the crisis. Local Government Chairman Chief Timothy Nwachi noted that previous administrations had neglected flood victims. Beneficiaries such as Blessing Okoche and Mrs. Favour Edwin, who lost family members in the flood, expressed gratitude to Governor Nwifuru, saying the support would help alleviate their suffering and aid in rebuilding their lives.
The disaster has highlighted the need for effective disaster‑management and response mechanisms in the region. The government’s provision of relief materials and financial assistance demonstrates its commitment to addressing the needs of its citizens. As the state continues to recover, it is essential to implement measures that prevent similar disasters in the future. The international community is encouraged to support regions affected by natural disasters, and Ebonyi State’s actions represent a positive response to that call. Ongoing commitment to supporting affected communities and providing necessary resources for recovery and rebuilding remains crucial.
