Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies have made progress in metering customers, with 148,077 new meters installed in May and June 2025. According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the total number of metered customers nationwide now stands at 6,422,933 as of June 2025.
The commission’s metering factsheet shows that 63,180 customers were metered in May, while 84,897 were metered in June. This brings the total number of active electricity customers in the country to 11,821,194, a marginal increase from 11,784,842 in May.
A breakdown of the data reveals significant variations in metering rates among the distribution companies. Ikeja DisCo has the highest metering rate at 84.65 percent, followed by Eko at 83.33 percent and Abuja at 73.06 percent. In contrast, Yola has the lowest metering rate at 28.55 percent, with Jos and Kaduna at 29.51 percent and 33.46 percent, respectively.
Aba DisCo has shown the most improvement, increasing its metering rate from 37.88 percent in May to 45.17 percent in June. The company installed 12,376 new meters during this period. Benin DisCo has also reached the 50 percent metering mark, rising from 49.95 percent to 50.33 percent.
Despite this progress, seven of the 12 distribution companies remain below the 50 percent metering rate, leaving millions of customers without meters and subject to estimated billing. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s data highlights the ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s electricity sector, where metering gaps continue to affect customers and distributors alike.
As the regulator continues to monitor the situation, the focus remains on increasing the metering rate to reduce estimated billing and promote a more efficient electricity distribution system. With millions of customers still awaiting meters, the distribution companies face an ongoing challenge to meet the growing demand for electricity and provide accurate billing to their customers.
