The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has released statistics showing that electricity distribution companies (DisCos) have made significant progress in metering customers. Between May and June 2025, a total of 148,077 customers were metered—63,180 in May and 84,897 in June—bringing the nationwide total of metered customers to 6,422,933 as of June 2025. According to NERC’s metering factsheet, the country’s total active electricity customers increased slightly from 11,784,842 in May to 11,821,194 in June.
The data also reveal disparities in metering rates among DisCos. Ikeja DisCo leads with an 84.65 % metering rate, followed by Eko at 83.33 % and Abuja at 73.06 %. At the other end of the spectrum, Yola records the lowest rate at 28.55 %, with Jos and Kaduna at 29.51 % and 33.46 % respectively. Aba DisCo shows the most improvement, raising its metering rate from 37.88 % in May to 45.17 % in June after installing 12,376 new meters. Benin DisCo also crossed the 50 % threshold, moving from 49.95 % to 50.33 % in the same period.
Despite these gains, seven of the twelve DisCos remain below a 50 % metering rate, leaving millions of customers without meters and subject to estimated billing. NERC’s report emphasizes the need for continued efforts to improve metering coverage and provide accurate billing. The metering initiative is part of a broader government strategy to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the electricity supply industry. As DisCos work toward higher metering rates, customers can expect more accurate billing and improved service delivery. While the report offers a positive outlook on progress made so far, it also underscores the necessity of sustained action to address the challenges facing the electricity sector.
