Professor Bishop Sam Onyeagoziri Ndubueze, General Overseer of Champion Cathedral in Abakaliki, has alleged that members of a local occultic group are orchestrating a campaign of blackmail and intimidation against him. The dispute began after he publicly condemned the group’s activities—specifically the Omabe masquerade—on his community’s WhatsApp platform. His post went viral, and shortly thereafter group members threatened to “deal with” him.
On September 1, 2025, Bishop Ndubueze’s phones were stolen in Abakaliki. Initially, he did not link the theft to the threats. He reported the incident to Chief Engineer Chijoke Ikeagwu, chairman of the Onicha Development Union, who helped him block his accounts. The next day, the bishop filed a formal complaint with the Crack Department of the Nigeria Police, Ebonyi State Command.
After filing the report, Bishop Ndubueze claimed he received a phone call from unknown callers demanding ₦10 million to suppress damaging information they alleged they possessed. The callers threatened to force him out of Abakaliki because of his opposition to their masquerade. The number used for the demand was later identified as an unregistered line.
Soon after the threats, doctored nude photographs purportedly involving Bishop Ndubueze began circulating on WhatsApp and Facebook. He asserts that the images were fabricated using artificial‑intelligence technology, with his face taken from a traditional wedding thanksgiving event years earlier and merged with the body of a 26‑year‑old woman who had previously lived with him. The woman had been a victim of sexual harassment and had sent the photos to the bishop for safekeeping. According to the bishop, the trending images are a manipulation that combines his upper body with hers.
Bishop Ndubueze has called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice. The incident underscores the challenges faced by individuals who speak out against occultic activities in their communities and highlights the need for law enforcement to take such intimidation and blackmail cases seriously and protect those targeted.
