The Corpers’ Journey Advocacy Network has called on the Federal Government and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to make decent, safe housing a priority for corps members across the country. According to the network’s Managing Director, Taiwo Ajayi, the wellbeing of corps members should be central to the NYSC scheme. Poor housing conditions remain a major challenge for young Nigerians serving in remote or under‑developed communities. Reports from several service states show that many corps members must find accommodation on their own, often ending up in overcrowded apartments, rundown buildings, or unsafe environments.
Ajayi emphasized that corps members, who devote a year of their lives to serving Nigeria, are national assets who deserve proper accommodation, water, electricity and other basic amenities. The network is urging the Federal Government to adopt a structured national policy that guarantees standardized housing for corps members in every state. Such a policy could involve partnerships among the NYSC, host communities, local governments and private organizations to build or renovate corps lodges in strategic locations. Ajayi stressed that collaboration between the NYSC, local authorities and the private sector is essential to provide secure, habitable lodges for every corps member.
The NYSC has also been urged to strengthen its monitoring systems to ensure that schools, hospitals and other institutions hosting corps members fulfill their accommodation promises. Despite current economic difficulties, prioritizing corps members’ welfare is crucial for national development and youth empowerment. Providing suitable housing is a right, not a privilege; when corps members feel safe and respected, they are more motivated to serve their host communities effectively.
The issue of housing for corps members is not new, but it remains a pressing concern. The NYSC scheme was established to promote national unity and development, and decent housing is essential to achieving that goal. By prioritizing the wellbeing of corps members, the Federal Government and the NYSC can ensure that these young Nigerians are able to serve their country safely and effectively.
