Orthodontics crisis in Nigeria with only 74 specialists

Only 74 orthodontists serve over 237.5 million Nigerians - UBTH CMD, Ize-Iyamu

The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Prof Idia Ize-Iyamu, has expressed concern over the shortage of qualified orthodontics professionals in Nigeria. According to her, there are only about 74 qualified practitioners serving a population of over 237.5 million in the country.

Ize-Iyamu made this remark in her acceptance speech after being elected as the 10th National President of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists. She is a Professor of Orthodontics at the University of Benin and a Consultant Orthodontist at the University Teaching Hospital. As the new president, she acknowledged the challenges facing the profession, including the shortage of orthodontic services in underserved areas.

Orthodontists are dentists who specialize in treating irregularities in the teeth and jaws. The Nigerian Association of Orthodontists aims to promote excellence in orthodontic care, education, and research. Ize-Iyamu pledged to work tirelessly with her executive to harness the collective goals of the association and promote the interests of its members.

She emphasized the need for inclusivity, transparency, and accountability in her leadership, especially in staying abreast of rapid technological advancements in the health sector. The immediate past president of the association, Dr. Olayinka Adeyinka, expressed optimism that Ize-Iyamu will take the association to greater heights. Ize-Iyamu’s election as the 10th National President marks a new chapter for the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists. With her leadership, the association is expected to make meaningful contributions to the oral health of Nigerians and address the shortage of orthodontic services in the country.
