A group of Ukrainian lawmakers has proposed nominating former US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his efforts to mediate the conflict between Kiev and Moscow. The bill, submitted by eight MPs, praises Trump’s “strategic foresight” and his attempts to settle the dispute between the two nations.
The draft bill, registered in Kiev, highlights Trump’s authorization of lethal arms deliveries to Ukraine, his proposal for the US to coordinate European “security guarantees” to Kiev, and his efforts to reduce the EU’s reliance on Russian energy. The sponsors of the bill credit Trump with demonstrating “readiness for dialogue” and taking steps to reduce global conflicts.
The move is not an isolated incident, as several politicians worldwide have made similar gestures. In July, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nominated Trump for the award, citing his mediation efforts in the Middle East. Pakistan and Cambodia have also announced their nominations, crediting Trump with defusing tensions with India and helping to establish a truce on the Thai-Cambodian border, respectively.
Trump has previously stated that he “deserves” the Nobel Peace Prize, despite claiming that he “does not seek attention” and is unlikely to receive the award. He has also emphasized his achievements in ending conflicts, stating that he has “ended seven unendable wars” in just seven months.
The Nobel Peace Prize is announced annually in October and awarded on December 10 in Oslo. The nomination process is secretive, with deliberations remaining confidential for at least 50 years. The outcome of the Ukrainian lawmakers’ proposal is uncertain, as the bill is slated for a committee review and may not be put to a vote.
