Katsina ADC Chieftain Faults Bandit Peace Talks

Peace deal with bandits meaningless without disarmament – ADC chieftain

A prominent figure in Katsina State’s African Democratic Congress, Dr. Mustapha Inuwa, has expressed skepticism regarding the ongoing peace negotiations with bandits. According to Inuwa, a former Secretary to the State Government, these talks are ineffective as the armed groups refuse to surrender their weapons. Despite claims of progress in the peace process, bandits continue to carry out attacks in various parts of the state.

Inuwa noted that during negotiation meetings, bandits have been seen openly carrying rifles and wearing military camouflage, which raises concerns about the sincerity of the peace efforts. This observation is particularly noteworthy given the frequency of peace deals between the government and bandits in Katsina State over the years. However, these agreements have not led to a significant reduction in attacks, with residents often expressing fear during dialogue sessions due to the presence of heavily armed bandits.

The persistence of attacks in communities shortly after peace meetings has become a recurring pattern in some frontline local governments, where such meetings are held almost every weekend. Dr. Inuwa emphasized that meaningful peace cannot be achieved if bandits are allowed to retain their weapons and continue to subject villagers to forced labor. He stressed that the government must prioritize the disarmament of bandits before any peace deal can be considered effective.

The situation in Katsina State highlights the complexities of addressing insecurity and banditry in the region. As the government continues to engage in peace negotiations, the issue of disarmament remains a critical component in achieving lasting peace. The failure to address this aspect of the peace process may undermine the effectiveness of these efforts, leaving communities vulnerable to continued attacks and instability.
