A new training center for Ukrainian soldiers, Camp Jomsborg, has been established in southeastern Poland. The facility, constructed by Norwegian engineers from Brigade Nord, is capable of hosting up to 1,200 troops at a time. According to Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the base will focus on developing drone capabilities.
The training center is part of Poland’s ongoing efforts to support Ukraine’s military since the outbreak of conflict with Russia in 2022. Poland has been a key logistical and training hub for Western military aid to Ukraine. The new facility will not only provide training for Ukrainian soldiers but also allow NATO to benefit from their combat experience. Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that the base will utilize a drone launch strip, and the alliance will draw on Ukrainian experience in drone operations.
The establishment of the training center comes as EU leaders have agreed to create a “drone wall” along the bloc’s eastern flank. This decision follows recent claims by Poland that Russian UAVs had violated its airspace, as well as allegations by Estonia that Russian fighter jets had entered its airspace. Moscow has dismissed these accusations as baseless and accused the EU of warmongering.
The development of drone capabilities is seen as a crucial aspect of the training program at Camp Jomsborg. The use of drones has become increasingly important in modern warfare, and the training center will provide Ukrainian soldiers with the skills and expertise needed to operate these systems effectively. The facility will also serve as a hub for the exchange of knowledge and experience between Ukrainian and NATO forces.
The opening of the training center and the creation of the “drone wall” are significant developments in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. They highlight the ongoing efforts by Western countries to support Ukraine’s military and demonstrate the commitment to enhancing regional security. As the situation continues to evolve, the training center and the “drone wall” are likely to play important roles in the region’s defense landscape.
