The Social Democratic Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Adewale Adebayo, has criticised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the recent standoff between rival factions. In an interview on Arise Television, Adebayo said the PDP’s behaviour was predictable, given its past actions when in power. He noted that the party’s “lawless” conduct while governing has continued, and that the PDP is now “cannibalising” itself.
The dispute erupted over control of the party’s headquarters and pits two factions against each other: one led by Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, and the other by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. This clash is part of an ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, which has led to tensions and occasional confrontations between supporters of the rival groups. The internal turmoil raises concerns about the party’s ability to present a united front in the upcoming elections.
Adebayo also expressed concern about the role of the police in the dispute. He argued that the police should remain impartial and serve all citizens, while the PDP, as a private organisation, should resolve its internal conflicts without external interference. The incident has sparked broader debate about police neutrality in political disputes and underscores the need for parties to settle internal disagreements peacefully, without resorting to violence or outside involvement.
