The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, Rivers State Branch, has removed its Chairman, Golden Ekprikpo Spiff, from office due to allegations of gross misconduct. The decision was initially made by the branch, which suspended Spiff, and was later upheld by the National Working Committee, NWC, in a letter dated June 25, 2025. The removal was finalized during the union’s congress held in September 2025.
According to a letter signed by the Acting President of JUSUN, Marwan Mustapha Adamu, the state Vice Chairman, Princess Fyne Backo, has been directed to assume office in an acting capacity pending the outcome of an investigative panel set up by the National President. The former State Chairman of JUSUN, Anthony Nwachukwu, confirmed the development, explaining that Spiff failed to appear before the investigative panel set up to look into the allegations against him.
Nwachukwu, also a member of the State Working Committee of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, disclosed that the union congress unanimously voted in favor of Spiff’s removal. He noted that since the Vice Chairman assumed office as Acting Chairman, several issues confronting the union had been addressed, and progress was already being made within a short period. Nwachukwu stated that workers had been experiencing difficulties, including unpaid salaries, but the acting chairman has taken swift action to resolve these issues.
For instance, Nwachukwu mentioned that the acting chairman ensured the payment of salaries for the month of August, which had been pending. He also acknowledged that the acting chairman is working to address welfare issues that had been neglected. The removal of the former chairman and the appointment of the acting chairman are significant developments for the union, which has been working to address various challenges facing its members.
The investigative panel set up by the National President is expected to investigate the allegations against Spiff and provide a report. The union’s congress has ratified the acting chairman’s position until the end of the tenure, indicating a new direction for the organization. As the union moves forward, it is likely to focus on addressing the welfare issues and challenges facing its members, under the leadership of the acting chairman.
