Threads, a social media platform, has introduced a new feature called Communities to create a more connected experience for users watching live events. According to a company blog post, Communities are “public, casual spaces where users can exchange unique perspectives and join conversations about various topics.” The feature is currently being tested globally with popular interests such as the NBA, WNBA, TV, and K‑pop.
To join a community, users can search for it in the top‑right corner of the app and click “Join” if the category is available. Joined communities are added to the user’s feed, accessible through the hamburger menu. Each community has its own custom Like emoji that appears when liking a post within that community—for example, the Book Threads community uses a stack of books, while the WNBA Threads community uses a basketball.
The company has already launched over 100 communities, with more on the way. Standout contributors receive special badges, and the platform is developing ranking systems for posts within communities and the For You feed to prioritize relevant content. This update follows a beta test that was made available to select users, including social media influencers.
Communities are especially useful for live events such as sports games, allowing users to connect in real time and share their thoughts. As Threads expands its community offerings, it aims to attract more users and increase engagement. The introduction of Communities marks a significant milestone in the platform’s growth strategy, enhancing user interaction and creating a more immersive social experience.
