Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North and a former Labour Congress leader, has expressed his views on the recent feud between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and Dangote Refinery. In an interview with Arise TV, Oshiomhole stated that PENGASSAN’s approach to addressing its grievances with the refinery was misguided, as it resulted in a shutdown of the country’s oil sector.
According to Oshiomhole, while the union had the right to protect its members, it should not have done so in a manner that affected the jobs of other workers and threatened the Nigerian economy. He noted that the union’s actions, which included directing its members to cut crude gas supply to Dangote Refinery, were excessive and hurt innocent people, such as tomato sellers who relied on fuel to transport their goods.
The dispute between PENGASSAN and Dangote Refinery began when the refinery sacked 800 workers for belonging to the union. In response, PENGASSAN downed tools for two days, causing disruptions to the oil sector. However, following the intervention of the Federal government, the strike was suspended, and a truce was reached between the two parties.
Oshiomhole’s comments highlight the need for unions to balance their desire to protect their members’ interests with the potential consequences of their actions on the broader economy. The senator’s statement also underscores the importance of finding alternative dispute resolution mechanisms that do not harm innocent parties.
The recent feud between PENGASSAN and Dangote Refinery has brought attention to the challenges faced by workers in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria. The sector is a critical component of the country’s economy, and any disruptions to it can have far-reaching consequences. As the sector continues to evolve, it is essential for stakeholders, including unions, employers, and government agencies, to work together to address grievances and find solutions that benefit all parties involved.
The suspension of the strike and the truce reached between PENGASSAN and Dangote Refinery are positive developments, and it is hoped that the two parties will continue to work together to resolve their differences. The Nigerian government’s intervention in the dispute also highlights its commitment to ensuring the stability of the oil and gas sector, which is essential for the country’s economic growth and development.
