Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has emphasized the importance of the judiciary in upholding justice and fairness in society. Speaking at the commencement of the 2025/2026 Legal Year in Yenagoa, Governor Diri urged judicial officers to remain upright and committed to their duties. He believes that with God’s guidance, the judiciary will exceed expectations and deliver sound judgments.
The governor noted that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man, and its trust must be maintained. He appealed to Nigerians, particularly Bayelsans, to allow the judiciary to function independently and impartially. Governor Diri stressed that the judiciary’s autonomy is crucial in ensuring that justice is served to all, regardless of social class.
Chief Judge of Bayelsa, Justice Matilda Ayemieye, expressed gratitude to the state government for its support in maintaining the judiciary’s autonomy. She highlighted the cordial working relationship between the judiciary, the Nigeria Bar Association, the Legislature, and the Executive. Justice Ayemieye emphasized that the new legal year provides an opportunity for the judiciary to assess its performance, strengthen the rule of law, and strive for excellence.
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Biriyai Dambo (SAN), commended the bar and the bench for their hard work in ensuring that justice is served in Bayelsa. He noted that the current administration has prioritized the welfare of judicial officers and has paid all outstanding debts to law officers. The commissioner reiterated the administration’s commitment to enhancing the justice system in Bayelsa State.
