The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has expressed confidence that the South West region will continue to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. This statement comes in response to claims by supporters of Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a presidential aspirant from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), that the South West would not re-elect Tinubu.
According to Seye Oladejo, the APC Spokesman, Olawepo-Hashim lacks a strong political structure and the electoral capacity to win a national contest. Oladejo described Olawepo-Hashim as a “perennial aspirant” who may gather endorsements, but these do not necessarily translate to votes. He also stated that even if Olawepo-Hashim were to emerge as the PDP’s presidential candidate, he would likely be defeated in the election.
Oladejo criticized Olawepo-Hashim’s attempt to downplay the achievements of the Tinubu administration, calling it “distasteful and unacceptable.” He highlighted the administration’s efforts in areas such as infrastructure, education, agriculture, security, and fiscal reforms, saying that these developments are “visible and irreversible.” Oladejo argued that the PDP’s reliance on sentiment and nostalgia rather than competence and delivery would not sway voters.
The APC Spokesman emphasized that Nigerians would not be convinced to abandon the current progress under Tinubu’s administration for “recycled excuses” from the opposition. He urged the opposition to focus on governance rather than issuing press releases, stating that voters would choose continuity with a president who has delivered results in 2027.
The South West region’s support for Tinubu is seen as crucial in the 2027 elections. The APC’s statement suggests that the party is confident in its ability to maintain this support, despite claims from the opposition that the region may abandon Tinubu. As the election approaches, the dynamics between the APC and the PDP are likely to become more intense, with each party attempting to sway voters in their favor.
