The Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency has launched a vaccination campaign targeting 3,186,521 children against measles and rubella. According to Shehu Ibrahim, the state Immunization Officer, the integrated vaccination campaign is scheduled to take place from October 6 to 15, 2025, across the state’s 288 wards in 27 local government areas.
The campaign aims to immunize children between 9 months and 14 years against measles and rubella, as well as provide other vaccinations, including NOPV for children from 0 to 59 months, HPV for children from 9 to 14 years, and RI for children from 0 to 23 months. The exercise will be conducted at primary and secondary health facilities, as well as public buildings across the state.
Shehu Ibrahim emphasized the importance of parental cooperation, urging parents to ensure their children receive the necessary vaccinations. He warned against noncompliance, stressing that vaccination is crucial for preventing outbreaks and reducing morbidity and mortality rates.
The federal government has set a target of vaccinating 100 million children nationwide to reduce the incidence of measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases. According to available data, Nigeria reported 94,304 confirmed measles cases with 714 deaths between 2019 and 2024. In 2025, the country recorded 4,637 measles cases, with 1,539 confirmed cases.
The vaccination campaign is a significant step towards reducing the burden of vaccine-preventable diseases in Nigeria. With the support of parents and the community, the campaign aims to achieve high vaccination coverage and protect children against measles, rubella, and other diseases. The success of the program will depend on the cooperation of all stakeholders, including parents, healthcare workers, and community leaders.
