Former Edo State Governor and Senator Adams Oshiomhole expressed sympathy for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar after the latter criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent condolence visit to Plateau State. Oshiomhole made his remarks on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics,” saying that Abubakar was politicizing a matter that should be handled with empathy and respect for the deceased.

The controversy began when President Tinubu attended the funeral of Mama Lydia Yilwatda, mother of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, in Plateau State. Abubakar, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, condemned the president’s decision, arguing that Tinubu should have visited victims of insecurity in the region instead.

Oshiomhole defended Tinubu’s actions, stating that it was inappropriate to label the gesture as insensitive. He noted that attending a condolence visit is a natural response, especially given the president’s relationship with the APC National Chairman. Oshiomhole also recalled his own experience as a labour leader during Abubakar’s tenure as vice president, suggesting that Abubakar’s camp often forgets its own governance record. He warned that Abubakar has allowed himself to be consumed by partisan politics and urged him to rise above political bitterness.

The exchange underscores the ongoing tensions between the ruling APC and the opposition PDP. It also highlights how even matters of condolence and respect can become politicized in Nigeria’s deeply divided political landscape. The situation in Plateau State remains concerning, with continued insecurity affecting local communities. Tinubu’s visit has sparked debate over the government’s priorities and its response to the crisis. As Nigeria’s political environment evolves, observers will watch how the current administration addresses the country’s challenges and how opposition parties react to its actions.
