Benue crisis barbaric, unacceptable — Deputy Speaker

Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu expressed confidence that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will capture Abia State in the upcoming elections, despite the state currently being governed by the Labour Party. He made the statement while addressing a gathering of his supporters and APC members at the Abia Hotels in Umuahia on Sunday.

Kalu highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s plan to establish a seaport in the South‑East geopolitical zone, noting that the President views the region as a major trading hub and aims to bring a port closer to the people. He said the project is expected to boost economic activity, integrate Abia State more fully into mainstream politics, and enable the state to benefit more from federal initiatives.

Emphasizing the APC’s objectives, Kalu declared, “We are going to take over Abia in 2027; we want to work with the President to move our state forward.” He added that the gathering was not driven by financial motives but by support for the President and a desire to advance both the state and the federal government.

The APC’s intention to gain control of Abia State is significant as the party seeks to expand its influence in the region. With the planned seaport, the South‑East is poised for increased economic activity, which could have far‑reaching implications for regional development. As the 2027 elections approach, the APC’s efforts to secure Abia will be closely watched, and the outcome is likely to have a substantial impact on the state’s political landscape.
