Residents of Plateau State have voiced strong disapproval of Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s remarks made during the burial of Prof. Nentawe Yilwada’s mother, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The comments, perceived as insensitive, were delivered at the funeral service held at the COCIN Headquarters in Jos on October 4, 2025. In his speech, Akpabio told the grieving Yilwada that his mother had “chosen the right time to die,” a statement that many attendees and social‑media users found inconsiderate given the somber occasion.

The remarks sparked outrage, prompting numerous individuals to express their dismay online. Critics argued that Akpabio’s statement was thoughtless and demonstrated a lack of empathy for the bereaved family. The controversy was further complicated by allegations that APC leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, had politicized the funeral, using the event to gain traction in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.

Social‑media users were vocal in their criticism, describing the comments as distasteful and inhuman. One user, David Akpa, called the remarks “quite insensitive and derogatory,” while another, Ishaku Dakas, noted that Akpabio’s statements were unsurprising given his history of speaking without considering the repercussions. The backlash underscores the importance of sensitive communication, especially during times of mourning. As a public figure, Akpabio’s words carry significant weight, and the incident serves as a reminder that politicians must be mindful of their language and actions in sensitive situations.
