Electric boat racing championship held in Lagos Nigeria

Nigeria: E1 powerboat championship makes African debut in Lagos

The E1 series, the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing championship, made its African debut in Lagos, Nigeria, over the weekend. The event, which featured teams competing in battery-powered hydrofoil boats known as RaceBirds, was the sixth stop in the 2025 season. Team Brazil emerged victorious, claiming its first win of the season.

The Lagos race marked a significant milestone for the E1 series, which was launched in 2024. The championship has gained traction, with nine teams participating in the current season, including those backed by celebrities such as former Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, US actor Will Smith, and former Ivorian football player Didier Drogba. Drogba’s involvement was instrumental in bringing the race to Africa, according to E1 Series managing director John Williams.

The RaceBirds, which glide above the water to reduce drag and emissions, provided a thrilling spectacle for spectators. The event was well-received by the local community, with attendee Oluwadamilola Osundhin noting that it demonstrated Nigeria’s ability to host large-scale events. The Lagos government estimates that the event could generate up to $100 million in tourism and hospitality revenue.

The E1 series has a growing presence, with races held in cities such as Jeddah, Doha, and Monaco. The championship is set to expand, with plans to increase the number of teams from nine to 12 and add more races to the calendar. Williams expressed hopes to host more events in Lagos in the future. The 2025 season will conclude in Miami in November.

The success of the Lagos race highlights the potential for electric powerboat racing to gain popularity globally. As the sport continues to grow, it is likely to attract more participants, spectators, and investors. With its focus on sustainability and innovative technology, the E1 series is poised to make a lasting impact on the world of motorsports.
