Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and OpenAI have announced a multi‑year partnership to develop artificial‑intelligence data centers. AMD expects the deal to generate tens of billions of dollars in new revenue over the next five years, driven by the delivery of six gigawatts of chips to OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT platform. The announcement sent AMD’s share price soaring, rising more than 30 % before the market opened.
Under the agreement, AMD will supply OpenAI with graphics‑processing units (GPUs), which are essential for AI development. The partnership reflects OpenAI’s strategy to diversify its semiconductor supply and reduce reliance on Nvidia, the U.S. industry leader. In recent months, Nvidia and OpenAI signed a contract worth over $100 billion for equipment to boost OpenAI’s generative‑AI capabilities. AMD, however, faces competition not only from Nvidia but also from other major players such as China’s Huawei, Amazon, and Google.
The deal includes the issuance of 160 million warrants to OpenAI, a financial instrument that can be converted into shares under specific conditions. This collaboration underscores the growing importance of AI in the technology sector, as companies invest heavily in specialized hardware like GPUs. AMD’s GPUs are expected to enable OpenAI to further advance its AI capabilities, marking a significant milestone for AMD as it seeks to expand its presence in the AI market.
With the anticipated revenue from this partnership, AMD is poised to strengthen its position in the industry. As the technology sector continues to evolve, the AMD‑OpenAI alliance is likely to have a lasting impact on AI development and on the companies involved.
