Bye-elections: Don't vote for Labour Party - Peter Obi tells supporters

Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to verify the certificates of all candidates seeking public office. He made the appeal on his social media platform, emphasizing that many office‑holders possess forged certificates supported by fraudulent affidavits. According to Obi, these individuals managed to pass INEC’s screening, as well as checks by security agencies and the Senate, despite using fake documents in 2023.

The former governor of Anambra State expressed alarm at the growing normalization of crime in the country, noting that those in positions of authority are often the ones engaging in dishonest practices. He warned that this trend could negatively influence young Nigerians, who look to their leaders as role models. Obi questioned how the nation can expect its youth to be honest and upright when their leaders fail to set a good example.

Obi also criticized INEC for not taking sufficient action to address the problem, even after the elections. He argued that the commission fails to investigate these serious offenses before the next election, allowing individuals with questionable backgrounds to continue participating in the electoral process.

The call for certificate verification is significant because it seeks to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system. If implemented, such a measure could prevent candidates with forged credentials from being elected, promoting a more transparent and accountable political environment. As Nigeria navigates its complex political landscape, robust safeguards against electoral malpractice and the credibility of its leaders remain pressing concerns.
