Nigerians in Abuja are confronting higher fuel prices, with some filling stations now selling petrol at between N905 and N945 per litre. As of 6 October 2025, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited retail outlets, along with Empire, AA Rano and Shema filling stations, have adjusted their rates. Empire Filling Station in Gwarimpa is charging the highest price—N945 per litre—while stations such as MRS, Emedeb, Raniol and Eterna are dispensing fuel at N885 and N910 per litre.
The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria attributes the hike to the disruption caused by the PENGASSAN strike. Association president Abubakar Maigandi and spokesperson Chinedu Ukadike noted that the feud between Dangote Refinery and PENGASSAN may have triggered the latest price increase through panic buying and artificial scarcity. Maigandi added that members of the association who receive petrol from Dangote Refinery are still selling it between N885 and N895 per litre.
The PENGASSAN strike, which lasted two days, was called off after federal government intervention. The strike had been sparked by the mass dismissal of Nigerian workers at Dangote Refinery. Following the resolution of the feud, Dangote Refinery praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and others for their support in halting the strike action.
Depot prices for petrol products have also risen slightly. In Lagos State, Dangote Refinery and Raniol are selling at N844 per litre, Aiteo at N845, and NIPCO at N850. These developments come days after the Dangote‑PENGASSAN dispute was settled. In a related exchange, Vice President Kasim Shettima remarked that the country is bigger than PENGASSAN, to which PENGASSAN president Festus Osifo replied that the nation is bigger than Dangote Refinery and the presidency. Ukadike expects the situation to improve as petrol products become more widely available across the country.
The fuel price hike is likely to have a significant impact on the Nigerian economy and its citizens, and it remains to be seen how the situation will evolve in the coming days.
